My Thoughts on Prom 2012
Now, I told myself during my freshman year that I wanted my prom to be special. I wanted to go with someone who I was actually “talking to” at the very least.
And so the day came and I was with my boyfriend, whom I hold very near and dear to my heart. Never did I think that I’d be taking a boy to my senior prom, but my wish of going with someone special to me came true.
I was a little apprehensive about taking a boy. Sure some people knew that I had a boyfriend, but some others didn’t. And earlier that week in my AP Government class my teacher was talking about gay rights and how Obama’s stance on gay marriage may hurt his pool of the Black vote. Then he went on to proceed to ask every Black person in the class if they were more or less likely to vote for Obama. A lot of people were either indifferent or less likely; it was honestly a bit demeaning. Even from a girl that I used to date and am on bad terms with right now said she’d be less likely. I don’t know… it kind of hurt, seeing how I was friends with a lot of those people and how I was subjected to judgment and second-class citizenry. My teacher even once told us how gay marriage would redefine traditional marriage, opening a can of worms to people fighting to redefine marriage with undertones pertaining to bestiality and pedophilia. I am not even thinking about marriage right now, but it still hurts to hear to be compared to someone who would marry a horse or a pedophile.
Knowing that was the cognitive culture of my school, I spent the beginning of the night avoiding eye contact with people and with my head held down a bit. But after a couple of minutes on the dance floor, I told myself that I might as well enjoy my night. I was surrounded by my closest friends, the boy I loved, and it was my prom after all. If anyone was going to give me trouble, they can honestly eat it because their narrow-mindedness is their problem and not mine. Instead of being obnoxious and kissing everywhere, I decided to act graciously, but still dance the night away. Jean and I aren’t that type of couple anyway to flaunt and be all over each other in public. But last night was really fun and the after kickback at the hotel was fun too.
Even though taking a boy to prom and facing my whole school sat (and still sits) heavy on my mind, it’s something that I can say I’ll be proud of doing for my entire life. Even though not everyone is supportive of LGBTs, I will not back down. And taking my boyfriend to prom isn’t meant to be as statement, it’s just me living my life and being with who I want to be. If I was dating a girl at this point in time, I’d take her. But since I’m obviously not, I’m glad that I didn’t crumble under the societal pressures to take a girl, even when I’m currently happy with a guy: something I rampantly saw last night. I’m not going to hide us in the shadows. Jean’s my boyfriend and I have no shame in expressing our relationship at a public school event. After all, he means a lot more to me than they do. That aside, thank you for being my prom date, babe. And thanks to all my friends who helped make last night special, who stuck with me through thick and thin, who accept me for who I am, and for helping me be who I want to be.
Thank you for taking me yesterday, it was one of the most funnest nights i have ever experienced, and i have you to thank. I cherish every moment we spend together and i cant wait to spend more. And thank you Mark’s friends! It was so nice meeting all of you and making me feel welcomed and not socially awkward.. (: Love you babe <3333 :D
